While the domestic aviation market has steadily reopened on a state-by-state mode, international flights are still limited. Separate views are therefore important to provide accurate insights.

Changes in bookable flights year-over-year

  • On the domestic market of the USA, the number of bookable flights observed this week 20% below the number offered for the same week last year and on average remains the same until March 2021. A ramp-up is seen between the weeks of 29 October 2020 to 4 March 2021, reaching on average 130% of the capacity compared to the same period the prior year.
  • On the international market of the USA, the number of bookable flights observed this week is 55% below the number offered for the same week last year. A ramp-up is seen between the weeks of 29 October 2020 to 4 March 2021, reaching on average 125% of the capacity compared to the same period the prior year.

 

Changes in prices year-over-year

  • Regarding prices, continuing the trend of the past three weeks, airfares remain lower by 25% on the USA domestic market for the weeks of 29 October 2020 to 4 March 2021; and reach similar levels on the international market.

Changes in bookable flights year-over-year

  • On the domestic market of the USA, we observe a 15% drop on bookable flights the week of 13 August 2020 for departure dates the week of 20 August 2020 compared to the same period last year. It represents a 45-p.p. improvement compared to our observations mid-June.
  • On the international market of the USA, we observe a 65% drop on bookable flights the week of 13 August 2020 for departure dates the week of 20 August 2020 compared to the same period last year. It represents a 20-p.p. improvement compared to our observations mid-June.
  • At a global level, we are observing bookable flights returning to a similar volume than in 2019 by the week of 8 October 2020. We see the same trends in both domestic and international markets of the USA. The number of bookable flights YOY between October 2020 and February 2021 goes even higher with a 40% increase on the domestic market and 30% increase on the international market compared to the same period last year.

 

Changes in prices year-over-year

  • For the first time since our initial observations, prices globally and in the Americas are now back to the same level as in 2019 for the weeks of 8 October 2020 to 21 February 2021 compared to the same period last year. In the USA, the prices observed on the domestic market are on average 25% lower than the previous year and the same for the international market.

    • On the domestic market of the USA, we observe a 15% drop on bookable flights the week of 23 July 2020 for departure dates the week of 30 July 2020 compared to the same period last year. It represents a 30-p.p. improvement compared to our observations three weeks ago.
    • On the international market of Europe, we observe a 65% drop on bookable flights the week of 23 July 2020 for departure dates the week of 30 July 2020 compared to the same period last year. It represents a 10-p.p. improvement compared to our observations three weeks ago.

 

Changes in prices year-over-year

        • Similar to the price trends observed in the AMRS, on both domestic and international markets of the USA, prices remain lower than the same period in 2019, by 20% and 15% respectively.

      • On the domestic market of the United States of America, we see a drop of bookable flights by 40% for departure dates the week of 9 July 2020 compared to the same period last year, which is a 15-p.p. improvement Vs. our observations two weeks ago.
      • On the international market of the United States of America, we see a drop of bookable flights by 73% for departure dates the week of 9 July 2020 compared to the same period last year, which is a 10-p.p. improvement Vs. our observations two weeks ago.

          • On both domestic and international markets of the USA, prices remain globally lower than the same period in 2019, by 20% and 7% respectively.

        • On the domestic market of the United States of America, we see a drop of bookable flights falling by 57% for departure dates the week of 25 June 2020 compared to the same period last year.
        • Looking at the trends two months ago, we observe bookable fights returning to a similar number than 2019 by 9 of July 2020, with a ramp-up starting the week of 11 June 2020. Today, such return is observed the week of 20 August 2020 and on average below by >10% for the week of 6 August to 24 December 2020 compared to the same period last year.
        • On the international market of the United States of America, we see a drop of bookable flights falling by 83% for departure dates the week of 25 June 2020 compared to the same period last year.
        • Looking at the trends two months ago, we observe a similar move back as on the domestic market with April observations showing a ramp-up on the week of 11 June whereas today it is seen on the week of 20 August 2020.
